FAQsQ. Is your tile rated by any ceramic agency or institute? A. The Ceramic Tile Institute does not rate our tiles. Q. What kind of uses are your tiles best suited for? A. Our tiles are considered for indoor wall use application only. Our handcrafted tiles are not made to be freeze tolerant, for use in pools, wet or dry saunas or fountains. Our tiles are not rated for kitchen counters, but may be used in Bath applications. lf clients insist on putting our tiles on a counter, please suggest incorporating a built-in cutting board or a work-surface station into their design. Handcrafted tile is not acid resistant and can stain from substances such as juice, cola, cleansers or sealers "Cement Board or a traditional mud-set should be used if tile can come in contact with water. Q. I've been looking at some of your competitors' websites and some of the same patterns are a few cents less expensive, what gives? A. Some of the same patterns may be less expensive on other websites but please don't confuse the pattern and/or design of the tile with the quality of the tile. While some of the Talavera patterns remain the same from manufacturer to manufacturer, the quality of the bisque and the glaze can vary a lot. Our tile bisque is nearly 100% free from warpage and chipping when compared to other manufacturers. In addition, our quality control experts ensure that the glaze on our tile remains as consistent as possible from batch to batch. These two main factors differentiate our tile from the rest of our competition. While it may make our tiles a few cents more expensive, it usually saves our clients hundreds of dollars in installation and repairs. Please call for more information. Better yet, we challenge you to order samples from us and from our competition and see the difference for yourself! Q. Can you tell me more about your sinks? SINKS - all sizes and patterns are approximations Sinks are hand-crafted and should be used as a decorative feature. They are not UL rated. Sink plumbing should be installed by hand, without the use of tools. San Diego House of Tile is not responsible for sinks which crack, chip, or craze prior, during or after installation. Q. Can I use your tile for flooring? A. Tiles are not rated for floor use due to wear and slipping concerns. However, many people do like the way that a few accent tiles look when installed in conjunction with other floor tile. What else should I know about your tile? AS IN ALL TILE, HANDCRAFTED TILE CAN CHIP, NICK & SCRATCH. TILE SIZES are approximations, within 1/4 inch. Measurements per square foot include a standard grout joint. AII measurements of tiles, moldings, liners & trims are in inches. Both GLAZED and UNGLAZED (Bisque/Pasta) tiles: have size, texture and shade variation. Color and shade variation are sometimes extreme. The surfaces of handcrafted tiles are rarely flat and may vary in thickness. Installers should shuffle tile and/or draw from multiple cartons to take advantage of these variations. Bisque/Pasta refers to unglazed tile that should be sealed before grouting. Matte Tiles may have little or no shine, are more porous and may pick up grout colors if a dark grout is used. SAMPLES MAY NOT ACCURATELY REPRESENT THE FULL RANGE OF VARIATIONS OF AN ACTUAL ORDER. Variation in size and color may occur from shipment to shipment. No guarantee that tiles received in subsequent orders, as add-ons will match or blend well with those from original order. Dye lots do not exist in our tile production. Several types of surface irregularities can occur (surface pops or puddles of glaze in depressions...) Surface pops and efflorescence may occur before and/or after installation and are not uncharacteristic of handcrafted tiles. Surface pops result from concentrated spots of lime that pop-off of the tile. Efflorescence describes the growth of salt crystals on a surface due to the evaporation of salt laden water. CRAZING and CRACKLING are inherent characteristics of many handcrafted tiles. "Crackling describes the appearance of cracks in the glaze surface. Crazing describes a condition in which tile may appear to have tiny spider-web fractures in the glaze. A mud set or Thinset is recommended. Never apply tile to green board or sheetrock & never use mastic. When using Cement Board install with Thinset or a mud set can be used instead. Sanded Grout is recommended for grouting. We do not recommend or advise the sealing of our glazed tiles. Rejection of tiles must be made prior to installation. Installation of our tile constitutes acceptance of these irregularities. LTL's should be inspected prior to acceptance. Any obvious damage must be noted on the Bill of Lading. To avoid customer service problems or delays, order 5%-10% extra for cuts, breakage and layout changes. San Diego House of Tile has made every effort to correctly represent tile colors.
