About Our Talavera Tile

Our Talavera tile line is a red bodied tile with a  gloss glaze.  As with all of our tiles, the body and glaze are all hand-made and painted.  Talavera tiles are recommended for interior wall use.  Due to their hand-crafted nature, variation in size and color do occur.  Talavera Tiles should be shuffled during installation in order to blend the variation and achieve an authentic look.

Talavera History

Talavera roots date back to 15^th century Spain.  Many of the designs and patterns can be traced back to Chinese and Philippine origins while even older variations of this art form date back to 8^th century Arab culture.  During the middle ages, craftsmen in Italy began experimenting with glazes and as a result many new colors were developed.  When the Italians introduced the unison of the Arab, Italian, and Asian motif during the 15^th century to Spain the Talavera ceramic was born.  In turn, following the Spanish colonization of Mexico, the Spaniards introduced the new ceramic and Mexican artisans adopted it.
